La seguridad informática se encarga de proteger la integridad y la privacidad de la información almacenada en los sistemas informáticos ante cualquier amenaza. También busca minimizar los riesgos físicos y lógicos a los que está expuesta y evitar los ataques maliciosos. Los tipos de seguridad informática se clasifican según el enfoque de estudio: desde la naturaleza de los elementos usados (seguridad activa y pasiva) o desde la naturaleza de la amenaza (seguridad física y lógica).

Existen cuatro tipos de seguridad informática que son usados por muchas empresas en las actualidad. La seguridad activa hace referencia a las medidas preventivas del sistema para evitar ser atacado (detección de amenazas), mientras que la pasiva se refiere a las acciones realizadas una vez que se ha producido el ataque, minimizando su impacto y activando los mecanismos de recuperación de la información. Por ejemplo, los firewalls de hardware o cortafuegos y los antivirus forman parte del tipo de seguridad activo; las copias de seguridad y la realización de un borrado completo del sistema (formateo) son muestras de la seguridad pasiva.
Por otro lado, entre los tipos de seguridad informática se encuentra el físico, el cual se utiliza para proteger el sistema usando barreras físicas (tangibles); la seguridad lógica se encarga de resguardar el software y todo aquello que no es físico (programas y datos). Invertir en personal de seguridad o aislar los dispositivos en espacios exclusivos para personas autorizadas son ejemplos de seguridad física; asimismo, la instalación de sistemas que codifiquen y soliciten la autenticación del personal forma parte de la seguridad lógica; por ejemplo, el WPA \WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access o Acceso protegido Wi-Fi) permite el acceso solamente al personal autorizado.
Teniendo en cuenta lo anterior, es preciso aclarar que los distintos tipos de seguridad informática pueden trabajar conjuntamente; así, los antivirus protegen los sistemas informáticos a través de la detección y eliminación de amenazas (virus y spyware entre otros) y la elaboración de copias de seguridad, entre otras funcionalidades.
